As I picked up my current favorite pair of earrings this morning, I had a thought. “I love imperfections.” You see, these favorite earrings of mine are imperfect. They are awesome, but imperfect. They have a large silver circle with a heart that dangles in the middle of them. The thing is one of them is missing its heart. So, as I was putting them on I realized how many things I love because they are imperfect.
I like when things are messy. It doesn’t bother me when things go awry (sometimes). I try to make my clothes not match. I like things a little torn up and ratted, even dirty. As I was thinking about how I love all these little imperfections in life, I thought about how God feels the same about us. We are all so imperfect. Which one of us isn’t a mess in some way? Which one of us doesn’t go awry or isn’t torn up and ratted sometimes? Which one of us isn’t a little dirty?
None of us. Yet God still loves us.
Now, I’m not simply speaking of being a mess or torn up a little on the outside… I’m talking about inside too. You don’t have to act like everything is perfect. Just be honest. With yourself. With God. This honesty sometimes hurts a little, but once you reach it, God can move even more in you.
If you present yourself as perfect to the Lord, why do you need Him? If you come to Him without any need because your life is fantastically perfect then what do you expect Him to do?
Sometimes I think people act perfect out of fear. Fear that other people will see us hurting or disheveled. Fear that God won’t accept us if we aren’t sinless and perfect. But God loves us no matter the imperfection. The Bible says “And so we know and rely on the love God has for us…There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear…” 1 John 4:16-18
I guess what I’m saying is it’s ok to be imperfect. God loves you no matter what.
